True Life: I Have a Shopping Problem

“Hello, my name is Tierra and I have a shopping problem.” Whew chile, they say the hardest part is admitting it but honestly, the hardest part is trying to correct it. My love for shopping started at a young age. My mom and I would get up early on Saturday mornings and hit our favorite stores. We would shop from morning to evening with a nice lunch in between. We never went overboard and sometimes we just windowed shopped but it was a bonding time that I enjoyed. As I got older shopping became a past time and I would use to relax and calm my nerves. This quickly turned into a problem that I am finally ready to take head-on.

Last year, I realized that I was becoming an emotional shopper. BIG PROBLEM! After my car accident, I started spending money whenever I felt like it. My bills were paid but any extra was going to buying myself nice things. My excuse was, “I deserve it after what I have been through,” or, “It’s on sale, I have to have it.” At the start of the year, after peeping my bank account statements from 2018, I realized that the last quarter left my pockets touching, y’all. After making some returns and doing some recalculating I decided that I was going to put myself on a 90 day shopping fast. Yes, 90 whole, long, days!

After mentioning it in my Instastories, I was showered with encouragement and prayers (legit, some of y’all were like, “Sis, you are going to need my prayers”). I even received messages where others wanted to join me in the fast. Others asked me, “Why?” Now don’t get it twisted I am great at managing money but with the fast I am trying to correct a habit. When I am bored, sad, angry, happy, celebrating, I want to shop when I don’t need to. The 90 days are to allow me to find other ways to go through my emotions (I am also trying not to turn to food). I figured in 90 days I should experience all types of emotions and be able to coop in different ways. Here are my rules and regulations:
  • I can buy the basics such as toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, feminine products, tissue, laundry detergent etc.
  • I will allow myself to purchase one other item a month. So 3 items outside of the basics.
  • Food will be bought because I need to eat. This is interesting because I am also trying not to turn to food as a safe place.
  • When I want to shop, I will find other ways to spend that time. Workout, work on my blog, hang out with friends, go to a museum or movie or something.
  • I will attempt to save $350 during these months.

Simple as that. My 90 days have already started as of January 1st. It runs until April 1st. The last reason I know I needed to lay off shopping, my closet is becoming a whole mess. Can y’all believe that this shirt was tucked away in the back of the closet? I can... This is why the shopping fast is necessary.

If you are joining me, welcome. Let’s keep each other accountable. Follow my Instagram for updates and laughs for my struggle (because it has been real already).

Happy No Shopping!

  1. Love the transparency! I love shopping as well. Something that helps me is when I get the urge, I’ll go online and pick out like EVERYTHING I want and add it to my cart. I’ll put so much stuff in my cart that there’s no way I’d pay for it so I ultimately end up X-ing out the screen! Haha works like a charm! Xo

  2. This is a great post! I think I allow myself to have a food problem because I can't always go out and buy things that I really want. I buy my food all the time and that taking a lot of money.

  3. I can surely embrace this idea, however I have only been able to do a 60 day shopping ban. I do have a "one in one out rule" that has worked consistently for me. I will be cheering you on from here. Happy 2019 to you & yours.
