Pleats Aren't My Friend

One the biggest trends out this fall and winter is the pleated skirt and if I am being honest, it’ wasn’t one that I was rushing to try. First of all, I don’t really consider myself to be “trendy” per se but I do like to dabble in trendy pieces from time to time. Personally, I am here for classic pieces that I can wear from year to year. Second of all, me and pleats have never been the best of friends. With my body shape, they tend to make me appear wider so I just stray away from them. All year though, I have been trying to step outside of my comfort zone and try things that I don’t normally try which brings me to our post today.

There are often times when there are trends, especially in fashion, that we might want to try but don’t really know how to take the trend and make it fit into our style. We go out and buy the piece and just hangs in our closet, well I have come up with 5 key ways that you can take a trend and make it your own. Here we go:
  1. First, pair the trend with one of your favorite fashion trends/items in your closet. For me, I love bomber jackets. Especially the army green one in the post. It is lightweight enough for the summer and perfect for layering in the fall.
  2. Second, search for the trend at a good price. Search your local discount stores, the sale racks at your favorite store, at your favorite online store. Don’t go out drop coins on something that you might not even wear. I found a pleated skirt for $9 at my local Target.
  3. Third, take the item home and try it on and play around with styling it. Try it on with different pieces and see if you can make multiple outfits of it. Are you really going to get enough wear out of the item to purchase it? Now if you follow tip #2 then you might not have to worry about the number of wears you get out of it. I am not concerned with if I can make 5 or 6 outfits out of this $9 skirt. I would be happy with 2 or 3 or 1.
  4. Fourth, check out your favorite bloggers or style icons and see how they fit the trend into their everyday style. I know there have been so many of my blogger boos showing out with the pleated skirt trend that I had to give it a try.
  5. Fifth and most major key, DON’T BUY THE TREND IF YOU ARE NOT FULLY WILLING TO GIVE IT TRY! LEAVE IT AT THE STORE. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.
I hope these 5 key things help somebody when trying to fit a trend into your wardrobe. They definitely help me and I use them all the time. Let me know if you have any keys to working trends into your style or if there are any trends that you want to try but don’t know how. I might be able to help you out sis!
